A huge event is coming to Swift Current in March 2010.

Swift Current will welcome the world in March 2010 after landing the Ford World Women's Curling Championships.  They are set for the Credit Union iplex from March 20th to 29th.

The official announcement was made yesterday at a noon news conference.  The top 12 women's teams from across the world will converge in our city shortly after the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Barbara Walter is the Co-Chair of the event.  "This is huge for Swift Current.  I have no doubt we are up for the event.  We have hosted three national events before, and lots of provincial events.  I know we have lots of good volunteers and lots of curling enthusiasts."

The event is expected to attract fans from all over the world, and nearly 200 international media will be covering the Worlds.

Mayor Sandy Larson was ecstatic at yesterday's news conference.  "World Curling!  What a huge event for the City of Swift Current.  Because of our citizens' commitment to the renovation and expansion of the iplex, we had an opportunity to host the event."

Canada, Sweden, Norway, Japan, China, South Korea, Switzerland, Denmark, Scotland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Russia, Italy, and the US could all have teams at the event.

Swift Current was chosen because it has a perfect sized facility for the event, and its nearly 3000-person capactiy.  The Worlds will transform the hockey side of the iplex into four sheets of curling ice.
