Colts Football vs Central

The Swift Current Comp Colts team is taking some positives out of a 58-16 loss to Yorkton in Moose Jaw High School Football league action over the weekend.

Coach Derek Murdoch noted Yorkton is an older club and a powerhouse in the league. He was happy with the way his young team put up a fight.

"Statistically it doesn't sound great," he said. "I was pretty happy with the way the guys battled and competed."

"We scored a couple of touchdowns against their first team defence. There will be other teams in the league that will not score against that team."

The Colts also brought some tenacity to the game.

Derek Murdoch Interview"Our young guys, even though we played a team that was much bigger and much stronger than us, we battled," Murdoch said. "We had guys pushing back."

There were some improvements the Colts could make on both sides of the ball.

"Offensively we need to get Grady (Lamontagne) a lot more time," Murdoch said. "Our quarterback was under some severe duress most of the game, but was able to kind of roll around and make some things happen."

"I think we have to work on getting a push. There were some positives that happened too, we were pretty happy with our special teams."

Defensively he felt they did a lot of the right things and were just physically outmatched.

"We had our guys getting to places where they needed to be," Murdoch said. "It's just that when you're asking grade 9s and 10s to tackle stud grade 12 running backs or receivers it's a tough job for them physically."

The Colts are now 1-2 on the season and host Moose Jaw Peacock on Friday.

Murdoch added they're another very strong team who, like the Colts, prefer to throw the ball.

Other high school results this weekend saw the Maple Creek Redmen top Shaunavon 47-27 and Gull Lake beat Loreburn 76-16.
