The Swift Current Comp Colts football team picked up where they left off last week, after a 44-0 win over the Estevan Elecs to close the 2017 regular season.

Hosting a quarter-final playoff game at home against the Weyburn Eagles Saturday afternoon at Colts Field, the defense pitched a second consecutive shutout, winning 24-0.

The windy afternoon game didn't take long to see the first score put on the board, as halfway through the first quarter, quarterback Austin Beverly-Collins found receiver Nic Bachiu for a four-yard touchdown.

After Ethan Kurtz converted on the extra-point to make the score 7-0, the Colts defense clipped the wings of the Eagles' offense the next drive, forcing Weyburn to surrender a safety with their backs against their own goal line on third down.

With the lead pushed to 9-0 at the end of the first quarter, the second frame of the playoff contest was where the scoring broke open.

Runningback Parker Strojwas found daylight and the end zone with a little help from his O-line on a three-yard rushing touchdown, and Nic Bachiu scored from 27 yards out seven minutes later to push the Colts lead to 22-0 at the half.

Trey Robichaud would add a pair of rouge singles off of punts in the second half as the only scoring in the final two quarters.

"The defense was good," said Colts head coach Derek Murdoch after the win. "It's the second game in a row we haven't given up points, so you can't ask for much more than that."

With a combination of Bachiu, Strojwas, and linebacker Josh Keller rushing the ball on offense in the game for the Colts, Murdoch says the diversity was key on a tough day to establish a passing game.

"The big difference for us was we ran that wildcat formation in the second quarter, which gave us some energy," he said. "Obviously that got the guys going, and it was big to help us pull away a little bit."

After the Moose Jaw Vanier Vikings pulled off an upset win over the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones in Saturday's other quarter-final, the Colts now head to Moose Jaw to face the Peacock Tornadoes on Saturday, October 21, while the Vikings travel to Yorkton to face the first-place Raiders in the semi-final games.
