A premier part of Frontier Days is the Canadian Cowboys Association rodeo, and it was a huge hit this past weekend.

Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday afternoon, cowboys and cowgirls took to the dirt in front of the jam-packed Kinetic Park grandstands.

Some Maple Creek riders finished well into the money for the saddle bronc.

Adam Gilchrist was second with a ride of 82 and Mike Gordon was third with an 81. (Results are unofficial.)

Rodeo announcer Donnie Peacock said while the rodeo was a great time, he hadn't seen bronc riding on that level in town for a while.

"I think probably on the Friday night that the bronc riding was as good as I've ever seen it at Frontier Days - a couple of Maple Creek guys - just fabulous watching," Peacock said. "Overall the crowds were probably the best that we've seen in many years. It was a lot of fun."

In bareback bronc riding, Brady Bertram of Maple Creek came first with a 79. Maple Creek's Jason Hofer's 69 also landed him in the money for bareback at sixth place.

It was a sunny weekend, and people were in the stands from a number of places, including some from South Africa. And they got to see plenty of talent from the Swift Current area perform well at the three-day event.

Swift Current's own Blaine Switzer continued his strong rodeo season, coming in fifth for tie-down roping. He was right behind Val Marie's Wyatt Hayes.

Switzer has been in the money 10 times so far for tie-down roping this season and five times for team roping.

In team roping, Chad Feil of Swift Current came sixth on the head, while roping with heeler Christian Brost of Maple Creek.

Whether it was local talent or a cowboy up from Paraguay, the Swift Current crowd was cheering loud for everyone competing.

"You couldn't beat the weather, and it was definitely a great product," said Peacock. "Hats off to the Exhibition Association and the job that they have done. It really was a ton of fun."
