Opponents of the Great Plains College SunDogs women’s volleyball team will be dealing with a power surge up the middle, as the team has recruited Brooke Couillard (St. Walburg, Sask.) for the 2011 Prairie Athletic Conference season.

Couillard brings provincial-level experience as a former member of Team Saskatchewan and will likely play most of the time in the middle position, though she could see some time at power as well. She was originally recruited two years ago by former SunDogs coach Jay Protz.

“She’s definitely a leader on and off the court, and she’s got a great attitude,” said second-year SunDogs coach Morgan Halyk. “She’s really meshed well with the rest of the team. She’s got a lot of height and a lot of power so we’re looking for her to do a lot of hitting and a lot of blocking.”

Couillard is one of five recruits announced today as the team’s roster is essentially finalized. Also announced were Kim Morton, Chyanne Ogle, Emily Cote, and Anika Blaschuk. The lone returning player from last year is Lisa Meili, bringing the total roster to nine.

“I’m feeling really good now that we’re kind of settled and know what the team is going to look like for the year,” said Halyk. “I’m definitely really happy with who we have … and we’d definitely love to win provincials, but improving on where we ended last year is the biggest goal.”
