The Vancouver Canucks announced this morning that they've hired Willie Desjardins as the team's 18th Head Coach, ending the speculation on whether the former Medicine Hat Tigers bench boss and recent Calder Cup champion would make the jump to the NHL.
The Climax native led the Texas Stars to their first AHL Championship just last week, and won the WHL's Ed Chynoweth Cup twice in his eight seasons with the Tigers. He also won silver as head coach of Canada's World Junior Team in 2010.
Desjardins reportedly signed a multi-year deal to be the Canucks new coach on Friday, and will replace John Tortorella, who was fired after Vancouver missed the playoffs in his only season.
