The Swift Current Drag Racing Association has gotten the green light for the summer.

Greg Mackay of the SCDRA says that in conjunction with the City of Swift Current and the Saskatchewan Health Authority they've been able to put a plan together that would see the summer tradition return to the Swift Current airport on July 4 - 5.

That plan of course involves many of the same health protocols that other sports and events will find themselves working with, such as social distancing and hygiene.

As a result, some changes are being made to the seating at the event that Mackay wants spectators to be aware of.

"We won't be supplying bleachers. People have to bring their own seating. We will be building a grid or some kind of safe area where the spectators will be able to sit that we can maintain social distancing. So people just have to be cautious and a bear with us a little bit, because we're all kind of new at this too."

Similarly, the concession will see similar rules and restrictions.

With this being the first race in the COVID-19 era, Mackay says that they are choosing to only run their three normal classes at first; Sportsman, Pro, and Super-pro on both Saturday and Sunday as people get used to how the process is going to work with the new restrictions.

"That's going to be with the whole weekend. Just as long as people can be patient and abide by the social distancing rules we should be able to have a great time at the Swift Current airport and watch a little bit of drag racing."

Racing gets underway on Saturday, July 3 at 1:00 p.m and Sunday, July 4 at 9:00 a.m.

A COVID-19 pre-screening form and waiver is required for anyone attending, available on the SCDRA's website.
