The Full Line Ag Female Midget AA Broncos' backs are against the wall after Game 1 of their opening round of South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League playoffs.

The Female Midget Broncos lost 4-2 to the Weyburn Drillers Thursday night at Fairview West arena.

Swift had trouble solving Drillers' goalie Taryn McKinny, after notching just a pair of goals off 38 shots - the Female Broncos gave up a manageable 25.

"We're going to have to find ways to win games with just scoring two or three goals," said Female Broncos' head coach Dan Johnson. "We got a couple goals, but we had some defensive lapses that cost us some key goals at the wrong time of the game and we weren't able to rebound, so that's the difficult part."

After falling behind 2-0 early into the second period, the Female Midget Broncos battled back to a 2-2 tie at the end of the second period. Both Kalea Sauder and Josie Calwell scored in the effort.

A dribbling goal in the third period put the Drillers back up on top which would prove to be the game-winner, despite a barrage of Female Midget Bronco shots finding every inch of iron on the opposing net.

"You're not going to get every bounce - if they get bounces, then you're just going to have to dig a bit deeper," Johnson explained, adding that the discouragement of losing what turned out to be a game of inches started to show among the team.

"On the bench you can't let yourself get down, you can't get away from what we've been talking about, and just continue to play our game - over time it will work, but we tended to get down a bit and I think we need to step it up to the next level."

An empty-net goal with less than a minute left sealed Swift Current's fate.

Swift needs a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, and head out on the road on Sunday to try and force a third game in the series.

Puck drop in Game 2 of the best-of-three series is 5 p.m. in Weyburn.
