Though roster and import draft moves have been already made by new Swift Current Broncos head coach and director of hockey operations Dean Brockman, the search to fill part of the void of Jamie Porter continues.

Porter announced in late-June that he was stepping down from his role as head scout and Director of Hockey Operations with the Broncos, although he won't officially be done until the end of July.

"Obviously that was unfortunate, but just what he felt he needed to do - totally respect that, he's been a part of this organization for a while," said Brockman, noting that filling Porter's head scouting role - as well as that of the director of player personnel tops the hierarchy of off-season personnel plans.

"I think that's your first step. I think you have to replace the guy that's going to try and help you get back the team that you need to be successful."

It will certainly be a tough vacancy to fill, as Porter has been with the Broncos since 2002, and in charge of the scouting department since 2005.

Nevertheless, Brockman and the Broncos will look to balance the old and the new, as the bench boss says certain areas of the past personnel contingent will definitely be looked at in the process of implementing a direction for the team.

"Obviously you don't want to try and change things that have been successful. If there's a recipe for success, you want to grab those ingredients - grab as much as you can," Brockman shared. "Obviously you want to make your own little tweak or change here if you can. As long as everybody gets to be on the same page, our goal is to get back to where this franchise was a year ago."

Getting 'on the same page' - it's a term Brockman threw around several times when discussing the candidate search, and the ability to find uniformity in terms of the identity of the team.

"I think they've got to want to find you the same players that you're looking for, you're going to want to find that cooperation," Brockman explained. "You want to find that person that's going to go beyond the traditional work ethic of day in, day out. I think you have to go above and beyond."

"I think you have to represent the Swift Current Broncos with professionalism and dignity, and really wear that Broncos crest on your sleeve," he added.

It's a mind-set that the Broncos board of directors has to be comfortable with, as a new-look Broncos team will don the green and blue for the 2018-19.

Brockman noted that once Porter's role has been filled, he will look to shore up other personnel decisions.
