Skip Rod Quintin crouches to call the line on Third Mitch Minken's shot while Tyler Friesen and Jason Senicar man the brooms. The Swift Current rink lost 7-5 in 10 ends.

A local rink is off to a good start at the SaskTel Southern Men's Curling Playdowns in Swift Current.

The Max Kirkpatrick foursome opened the event with a big 8-4 win in nine ends over Steven Slupski out of Moose Jaw.

Kirkpatrick says they were able to get into a big lead with a four-ender in the fifth.

“That was kind of a nice break there, he missed his last one and gave us a chance, and we took advantage of it.”

Slupski said "they curled pretty good" but knew they were in tough against a home rink that knew the ice.

Kirkpatrick returns to action this morning where he faces Jason Krupski from Whitewood, who needed extra ends to beat Regina's Brad Law 7-5 in his game.

In last night's draw Swift Current's Rod Quintin dropped a 7-5 decision to Chris Busby from the Highland Curling Club in Regina.

Quintin took a 5-4 lead into the tenth and says they they were hoping to make it to extra's.

"We played pretty well, until the tenth end. We just couldn't get that last draw in the tenth end that'd shut that ring down and make it a really tough deuce for them to score. I was really playing for an extra end, if we had any type of opportunity."

Quintin will now face Garret Vey on the B side at 3:00 this afternoon.
