NHL legend Theoren Fleury spoke to a full house at the Credit Union iplex Auditorium for today's KidSport Charity Breakfast

He got a lot of boos from fans at the Centennial Civic Centre in the 80s, but Theoren Fleury received a standing ovation at the Credit Union iplex Friday after speaking at the 5th annual KidSport Charity Breakfast.

Fleury, who went on to have a long hockey career which included a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames and an Olympic Gold Medal for Team Canada, recalled his days playing with the Moose Jaw Warriors, and squaring off with Joe Sakic and the Swift Current Broncos.

He says he has good memories about the rivalry and playing in Swift Current, and adds it was always fun to come to this building and there was a lot of atmosphere, although there was a lot of dislike for him from the fans. Fleury added the Warriors' rivalries with Swift Current and Regina prepared him for the future rivalries with Vancouver and Edmonton as he moved on to the NHL.

Much of Fleury's message focused on his recovery from a life of drug and alcohol abuse, outlined in his recent best-selling book "Playing with Fire". He says at the end of the day, it's great to be a part of the championships, and play for Canada, but he gets the most bang for his buck helping other people who have had similar life experiences.
