Logan Flodell made 37 saves for his first shutout with the Swift Current Broncos as he outduelled Giants goaltender David Tendeck in a 1-0 Broncos victory.

“It was a tough game to be in,” Flodell said. “We didn't play our systems too well, but we kind of got back on track. It happens every now and then when a hard working team comes in your barn, but we showed resilience.”

The Giants came at the Broncos with a lot of speed and gave them one of their most difficult tests during their eight game winning streak to begin the season.

“It was a different kind of game than we've played this year,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “I thought they played well. They probably deserved a point or two. They came in here with a plan and executed. Their speed put us on our heels at time. Logan Flodell was great for us and he was the big reason we won.”

The close win against the 2-4-0-1 Giants was a good reminder that the Broncos won't shoot the lights out every night and will at times have to battle for their victories.

“They're a young, hard working team,” Flodell said. “We didn't get off to the start that we wanted, but our leadership stepped up when we needed it and (Steenbergen) scored a big goal for us... Not every game is going to be 6-2. This shows we can handle adversity that is going to come into our dressing room.”

For Flodell it was another very strong performance coming off a 45 save effort in Tuesday's win over Lethbridge. He has gone 7-0 since being acquired from Saskatoon before the start of the season.

“I thought I saw the puck really well tonight,” Flodell said. “I was battling hard. The guys were getting the guys out from in front of me. That makes my job twice as easy. I'm trying to stop the puck as much as I can I guess that's what they brought me here to do. I'm just trying to be a huge part of this team and I'm just grateful to be here.”

Flodell has quickly taken to his new teammates and new surroundings. The Regina native's 0.940 save percentage is now tops in the league among starters. He's enjoying being a Bronco.

“They are such a good group of guys in that room,” Flodell said. “I'm so honoured to be here. We have such a good hockey team and we've just got to keep going. We're 8-0 and that's exactly where we want to be, but we've still got a long way to go. It doesn't mean anything yet.”

Tyler Steenbergen scored the lone goal of the game midway through the second period. At the end of his shift Steenbergen sped down the wing blowing by the Vancouver D and drove the net for his league leading 16th of the season.

Steenbergen has now scored in seven straight games.

Despite his goal and a crossbar from Alexi Heponiemi it was the quietest game from Swift Current's top line this season.

“Our three guys were just a little off tonight,” Smith said. “Pucks were hitting sticks and skates. Heponiemi hit a crossbar early in the game. That changes things if we score there. Just one of those nights. I don't think our guys were clean. They played well, they created some opportunities but their goalie was good too. Both goalies were excellent. I thought their plan was to take away time and space. I don't think our guys played poorly, but it was a little bit off tonight.”

While the Broncos were happy to win this type of game and battle down to the wire, there are some lessons they can take into Saturday night's game with a similar Edmonton Oil Kings squad.

“You hope that you learn a little bit from tonight,” Smith said. “Edmonton will have a similar approach. They're going to come at us with their youth and their legs. They didn't play tonight and were all here watching. They saw a game that they probably feel if they can execute close to what Vancouver did they've got a chance to win. For us we want to keep this thing going.”

Saturday's game will also be special as the Broncos will draw the winner of a season ticket for life after achieving their goal of 1700 season tickets sold this season.
