Former Swift Current Broncos GM and head coach Dean Chynoweth is back behind the bench in the NHL.

Chynoweth, who was behind the bench and in charge of the Broncos from 2004-09, was hired on as an assistant coach with the Carolina Hurricanes this week.

He will join the staff of new head coach Rod Brind'Amour for a team that made some significant changes this off season.

It's Chynoweth's second assistant coaching gig in the NHL. He spent three seasons in the role with the New York Islanders from 2009-2012.

During Chynoweth's stint with the Broncos, he amassed a 120-135-14-19 record over the five full seasons. His Broncos teams made the second round of playoffs once, the first round three times, and failed to make the post-season in his first year.

Chynoweth was also head coach of the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters from 2012-2015 and San Antonio Rampage in 2015-16.

He also had a previous stint as a WHL coach in Seattle between 2000-2004.

Most recently, Chynoweth was an associate coach with the Vancouver Giants last season.

He played 241 games in the NHL with the Islanders and Boston Bruins.

Also of note, and certainly still a pleasing thought for Broncos fans, Swift Current hoisted the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champs earlier this spring - a trophy named after Dean Chynoweth's father.
