Broncos McLean
Ty McLean fires a slapshot during a scrimmage game at camp

Hockey training camps always bring with them a surprise or two.

Players who come out of nowhere to force their way into the lineup.

Redvers product Ty McLean is hoping he can do just that as a free agent invite to Swift Current Broncos camp.

"I feel ok," McLean said. "Obviously the first couple skates after summer is a little bit rough. I feel my legs under me now. Not trying to do anything special... just trying to do the little things right and the rest will take care of itself for me."

McLean played the first half of last season with the Regina Pats before getting cut and going to Weyburn in the SJHL.

"Obviously I'm not coming here to be a first line power play guy," he said. "I just hope my work ethic impresses a couple people. I'm just going to work hard and hope that does it for me."

McLean put up 60 points in 43 Midget AAA games in 2011-12. He had only 1 assist in 24 WHL games with Regina last season, but added 17 points in 29 SJHL games with Weyburn.

Nelson, BC product Brandon Sookro is another new face who scored a few goals in scrimmage and hopes to turn some heads.

"Hoping to get into that black and white game," he said. "Take it one day at a time and see what I can do from there."

Sookro had 24 points in 38 BC Major Midget games last season. He also put up 5 goals in 7 games with the Junior B Nelson Leafs.

He and McLean are just two of several under the radar players hoping to make an impact and steal a spot from a more highly touted rookie or roster player.

We will see who made the next step during the Black and White intrasquad game on Sunday at 1pm. Tickets are $5 with the proceeds going to the Swift Current United Way.
