Glenn Gawdin had a goal and an assist in his 300th WHL game as the captain made good on the celebration with a 5-2 win over Brandon.

“It's been awesome Glenn is a leader from every aspect of him,” said forward Matteo Gennaro. “Off the ice in the locker room, on the ice he displays great leadership and he's a great player. Pretty historic night for him and we're happy for him.”

Gennaro had two goals and Aleksi Heponiemi added two assists in the victory over the What Kings.

“It was a good win for us,” Gennaro said. “We came out and go the start we wanted. Credit to Brandon they came out with a good push throughout parts of the game and didn't make it easy at the end. Overall we had a good game, but there's some things we still have to clean up.”

The Broncos seemed to have control of the game throughout the night, but Brandon hung around and had a strong push in the third period to make it interesting.”

“At times we played really good and at times we struggled,” said Broncos Associate Coach Ryan Smith. “When we laid off a bit we got ourselves in trouble. We're happy with the win so we can't complain too much.”

The teams came out skating hard in an entertaining first period that didn't feature many stoppages.

“It was a great game,” Smith said. “We're disappointed when we don't play well throughout the game, but the game itself... the pace in the first period was lightning. If you weren't ready to play tonight it was very obvious you get left behind.”

Gawdin got the crowd off their feet in a pre-game tribute and then again at the end of the first period as he set up Tyler Steenbergen on a very nice play for both guys to open the scoring. Steenbergen's 38th of the season also resulted in an assist for Gawdin as the captain reached the 100 point mark for the first time in his WHL career.

Before the game Gawdin reflected on what has allowed him to reach that milestone.

“Probably my linmates and the game plan the coaches have put in place,” Gawdin said. “(Heponiemi and Steenbergen) without world juniors would probably be there already. Give credit to those guys.”

Swift Current had a lot of good chances throughout the game including a breakaway and a 2 on 0 early in the second period that didn't even result in a shot. There was a bit of a lull in the middle of the second period before the Broncos broke things open late on a power play goal from Gennaro and a deflection from Beck Malenstyn.

The Broncos lost Tanner Nagel to an upper body injury in the second period. There is no update yet on the extent of his injury.

Gawdin scored shorthanded in the third period to seemingly put the game out of reach and bring the fans out of their seats one more time. Brandon actually made a game of it at that point getting a Jonny Hooker power play goal and a big shorthanded marker for Tye Lewis.

That's as close as Brandon would get though as Gennaro sealed it with an empty-net goal.

Joel Hofer made 22 saves to earn the win for Swift Curren as the Broncos moved to 39-13-3-1 on the season.

In the end a lot of the focus on the night remained on Gawdin's milestones.

“I think he's probably going to go down as one of the all-time great Broncos,” said Broncos Coach/Director of Player Personnel Manny Viveiros. “He's the one who drives our bus and leads our hockey team on and off `the ice. So many times throughout the season this year when we need to get going again Glenn takes it on his shoulders to get the team going.”

For Gawin it is a particular honour to reach the 300 games mark all in a Broncos jersey.

“It's unbelievable,” Gawdin said. “I couldn't ask much more for a junior career. My time here has been nothing but great. The fans, billets, teammates and coaches have been great. I really enjoy my time here.”

Playing in front of another sold out crowd on Saturday night reminded Gawdin how far things have come for the Broncos throughout his career.

“Going back to where I started until now it's been a transition where we were getting barely enough people to selling out,” Gawdin said. “Selling out regular season not just the last couple games. This organization has taken a lot of steps in the right way... it's only going to keep moving forward. Even on the road we get fans it's been unbelievable.”

The Broncos held a pre-game ceremony for the 2018 Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame inductees. They included local volunteers Larry Johnson, Dennis Loeppky and Shaunavon's owen women's hockey legend Hayley Wickenheiser.

Swift Current wraps up a three game weekend in Prince Albert on Sunday afternoon against a hungry Raiders team in the middle of a playoff race. Swift Current handled them well 5-1 on Friday and are looking for a repeat of that performance.

“We've got to play the same game we did Friday,” Gennaro said. “Come out, get a good start, play simple and fast and hard and we should be good.”
