For the second consecutive season the Swift Current Broncos named captain Glenn Gawdin their regular season MVP.

While remaining an impressive two-way player with grit and leadership, Gawdin also doubled his point totals from his 19-year-old season putting up 56 goals and 69 assists for 125 points.

He finished second in the WHL and second among all Canadian Hockey League players in points this season.

"It's a huge honour," Gawdin said of the MVP award. "With the team we have it could have gone to a lot of other guys as well. To be picked from those guys is pretty special."

Gawdin had the lead in the WHL scoring race before an ailment kept him out of the lineup for four of the last five games of the season. He told our broadcast on The Eagle 94.1 FM that he will be good to go for the start of the playoffs on Friday.

The other candidates Gawdin spoke of include two players that often lined up with him in Aleksi Heponiemi and Tyler Steenbergen. They were three of the top four point per game players in the WHL and three of the top six in the CHL. Heponiemi's 2.07 points per game ranked him at the top of the CHL with Gawdin at 1.87 and Steenbergen at 1.82 not far behind.

With a line like that the Broncos went out and added veteran scorers like Matteo Gennaro, Beck Malenstyn and Giorgio Estephan to provide the kind of scoring balance any contender would need.

"It's unbelievable," Gawdin noted. "Our depth is the biggest thing. Being able to have that depth is huge and has won us a lot of games this season. It's going to be the reason we win games in the playoffs."

Now the Broncos prepare for a first round playoff series with the Memorial Cup host Regina Pats. The teams split a home-and-home series over the weekend with both teams winning once in overtime and a lot of physical play.

"It's going to be a dog fight," Gawdin said. "Both teams are going for the same goal. Regina is a little different with a free ride to the Memorial Cup and that's our goal to be there too. The fact that we're matched up in the first round is what it is. You have to win your division so you're going to play them eventually. We just have to worry about beating them. That's our focus."

The series starts on Friday and Saturday in Swift Current with tickets on sale Monday at 9am on scbroncos.com.
