Moriah Andrews made 33 saves in a losing cause as the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats fell 2-0 to the Weyburn Gold Wings on Wednesday night in game 1 of their best of five female Midget AAA hockey playoff series.

The 3rd seeded Wings scored with 7:20 to go in the third period and then again with their net empty to secure the win over the 6th seeded Wildcats. Brooke Patron and Jenica Whitrow had Weyburn's goals.
Jane Kish stopped all 20 Swift Current shots to earn the shutout.

We played two real solid periods, the first and third,” said Wildcats Coach Terry Pavely. “We had good chances but didn't get second opportunities. Their goalie did a great job with her rebounds. We need to take away her eyes by having more bodies in front and shoot away from her glove.

The Wildcats outshot the Gold Wings 9-7 in the first, but they couldn't jump out to a lead on the home team. Weyburn then dominated the second period and outshot Swift Current 17-4 as it remained scoreless through 40 minutes. Shots were fairly even at 11-7 in favour of Weyburn in the third period.

We battled hard the entire night and need to make sure we have the same compete level again tomorrow night,” Pavely added. “When we established a hard forecheck we created offensive opportunities.

The Gold Wings have now won all 5 games between the two clubs this season. Three of them were 2-1 games and the others were both 2-0 in Weyburn's favour.

Game 2 is set for Thursday at Fairview West Arena in Swift Current. Puck drop is at 7:45pm.
