Golf Saskatchewan, in partnership with the PGA (Professional Golfers Association) of Canada, Saskatchewan Branch, officially announced on Thursday the creation of a junior men’s team championship and a junior women’s team championship as part of the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Championships beginning in 2012.

The junior men’s competition will have teams consisting of three golfers.  The lower two scores from each hole will make up the team score for that hole to be accumulated over the full 18 holes each day of competitive play.  The team with the lowest score over the three days of the championship will be crowned the Saskatchewan Junior Men’s Team Champion.

The junior women’s competition will have teams consisting of two golfers.  The lowest single score from each hole will make up the team score for that hole to be accumulated over the full 18 holes each day of competitive play.  Just like the junior men’s event, the team with the lowest score over the three days of the championship will be crowned the Saskatchewan Junior Women’s Team Champion.

Players competing in the Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Team Championships will also be eligible to win the individual competition of the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Championships and receive the chance to represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship and the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship respectively.

This year’s SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Championships and Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Team Championships will be held at The Legends Golf Club in Warman, July 2
nd-4th.

We are excited to incorporate a team championship with our provincial juniors,” said Phil Grosse, Manager of Sport Development & Marketing for Golf Saskatchewan. “This initiative encourages golf clubs to invest in the future at their club and to provide opportunities for kids to develop, play, and have fun with the sport.  The best junior golf tournament in Saskatchewan just got a lot more fun for everyone involved in junior golf.”
