The Great Plains College SunDogs Basketball teams hit the court tonight at O.M. Irwin school to open the 2012 season.

The College will have a Women's team for the first time in three years.

It will be the second year the the Men's team will compete in the Alberta Colleges Athletic League.

Coach of the Men's squad Devin Loeppky says the talent level increased when they joined that league.

“It was our first year in the Alberta League last year, which was a big step up as far as competition goes, so it was quite a shock for a lot of the guys and we had a bunch of really good players....we just weren't very deep.”

The men hope to improve on their 1-13 record from last year.

While playing in the ACAL could carry a hectic travel schedule, Loeppky says this year it's not bad.

“We actually do have quite a favourable schedule with having seven home games, then two of our away games are actually at Millar which is right close to here at Pambrun, so we're really only gone two weekends of the year.”

Tonight's games see the SunDogs face the Millar Edge.

The Women's game gets going at 6:30 while the men hit the court at 8:00PM.
