After a 12-run inning left a bitter taste in their mouths on Saturday, the Swift Current 57's put together a complete effort on Sunday to get back in the win column.

Hosting the Lethbridge Bulls, the 57's executed a fundamentally sound gameplan downing Lethbridge 5-1.

"It was a good performance from the guys," Swift Current Head Coach Joe Carnahan said following the win. "They were challenged after the Moose Jaw game and they responded. They came out, played solid defence, pitched really well and took advantage of our speed."

Making just his second start as a member of the Swift Current 57's, Mitch Guiberson was a big reason for Sunday night's victory.

The Pocatello, Idaho native allowed just one unearned run over seven innings of work on five hits and walk, while striking out four.

"I just told myself that every time I went out there, I was going to throw every pitch with conviction," Guiberson said. " I think that's what I did and it worked."

After dealing with a hectic few days getting into Canada prior to his first start in Weyburn, Guiberson says he was a bit more relaxed this time around.

"I felt really, really good," he said. "I was glad to go deep into the game and help the team out."

"He had to go from Idaho to Spokane then to Seattle to get a passport, and back to Spokane to fly out and a day later he was starting on the mound," Carnahan said of Guiberson's journey north of the boarder. "He had his legs underneath him a little bit more this time and he was outstanding. Anytime a guy can give you seven solid innings like that, is tremendous."

On the offensive side of things, Swift Current kept pressure on Lethbridge throughout the night, and made the most of the Bull's mistakes.

With the wind gusting up to 59 km/h Sunday night, Blake Adams hit a ball deep to left-center field that evaded the Lethbridge fielder and allowed Nick Canas to score from first on a two-out RBI triple.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 5th, the 57's kept applying the heat on Lethbridge and were rewarded.

Swift Current cashed in three runs during the inning, in which two scored on a Bull's error, and one came in on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the 6th, Cole Thibodeau increased Swift Current's lead to 5-1 with a bases-loaded single.

"That has kind-of been our game this year," Carnahan said. "We can bang the ball, but the biggest thing is, we start innings and generating runs with our legs and doing a little bit of small ball. Then when we can get the other team to throw the ball around, it's a good opportunity to get the guys that can bang to drive them in."

After Sean Chandler worked a scoreless 8th inning in relief, he walked the first two batters of the 9th paving the way for Fernando Pena to enter the game.

Despite giving up a single to the first batter he faced, Pena put the game away with a strike-out and back-to-back fly-outs.

For the time being, the victory moved Swift Current (24-12) back into first place in the WMBL's East Division, half a game ahead of the Regina Red Sox (23-12).

The 57's will have an off-day on Monday before hosting the Brooks Bombers (14-23) on Tuesday and Wednesday.
