Another awesome weekend for Swift Current's top line guided Broncos forward Aleksi Heponiemi to the WHL Player of the Week award.

Heponiemi had two goals and seven assists in Friday's win over Saskatoon and Saturday's win over Red Deer.

“We're doing great but we can still do a bit better,” Heponiemi said after Saturday's game. “We have to be better in the defensive zone still. We're just moving the puck, skating hard and doing the work.”

Tyler Steenbergen had eight points on the weekend, while Glenn Gawdin added five of his own. Steenbergen and Heponiemi are tied on top of the WHL points scoring lead with 46 points. Gawdin sits third with 38.

Heponiemi didn't feel like he was seeing the ice particularly well this weekend.

"I wouldn't say that," Heponiemi said. "It's just bounces once and a while and you get those passes done."

This is the third time this season a member of the Broncos won the player of the week award. Steenbergen has already won it twice in the previous seven weeks.

The Broncos take the best record in the WHL into Tuesday night's home game against the East Division leading Moose Jaw Warriors.

"That's going to be a hard game," Heponiemi noted. "They're a really good team and we're really looking forward to that. Can't wait to match up with them. I think we're going to have a really good game here and obviously want to be them a lot."

Swift Current is 13-3-1-0 on the season, while the Warriors sit at 15-4-0-0 with two games in hand.

You can hear the game on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 6:30pm. Puck drop is just after 7pm at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
