Ontario's Rachel Homan claimed her first Canadian Women's Curling Championship in front of a home crowd in Kingston, knocking off four-time champion Jennifer Jones of Manitoba 9-6 in the final of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts last night.

The 23-year-old Homan and her rink from Ottawa lost just one game in the round robin, that was to the undefeated Jones foursome, and then beat her twice in the playoffs.

Kelly Scott and BC claimed the bronze medal by beating defending champion Heather Nedohin earlier on Sunday. Jill Shumay of Saskatchewan finished fifth in the round robin to miss the playoffs.

Homan will represent Canada at the World Women's Championships next month in Latvia.

Meanwhile, the Tim Hortons Brier starts Saturday in Edmonton, and the field includes defending champion Glenn Howard and other top-name skips like Brad Gushue, Kevin Martin and Jeff Stoughton. Regina's Brock Virture rink will represent Saskatchewan.
