It couldn't have been a better home opener for the Swift Current Broncos on and off the ice.

New Broncos Assistant Coach Jamie Heward was part of his first win on the bench on Saturday when Swift Current beat Moose Jaw 7-1.

He felt it was important for them to make a good impression in front of the over 2600 fans at the Credit Union iPlex.

Post-Game Show with Jamie Heward"You come into your home opener and everybody's excited," Heward said. "Everybody's heard how good the defence is going to be. We've got a new goaltender in town that's probably going to be a fan favourite fairly quickly I imagine. I think it was important for the kids to come out here and prove to the fans that they're going to be able to work hard every single night and they're going to get results if they do that."

The former NHLer knows big crowds like that can really inspire the players and he's hoping to see that continue.

"You respond to people that are excited to have you out on the ice," Heward said. "It'd be nice to see the seats full every night for these guys to want to work hard. If they continue to do that... the community can be proud of the team."

The festive  atmosphere carried over from the hockey game to the after-party. Trooper drew a packed house in the curling rink and good will was flowing.

"It was a great weekend for the Broncos," said Coach/GM Mark Lamb. "It was great to see. There have been some tough times around here over the last couple of years. The patience and how the season ticket holders and all the community... it's great when you can have a real positive night all around. Hopefully there are a lot more of those nights."

Bronco fans have three more chances to see the team this week as they host Regina on Wednesday, Brandon on Friday and Saskatoon on Saturday.
