The second meeting of the season between the Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats and the Notre Dame Hounds last night had visions of a similar storyline to their first match-up.

Back on October 13 at Fairview West in Swift Current, the Wildcats out-shot the Hounds 37-20 but lost 1-0 in overtime as Hounds goaltender Kaitlyn Ross worked the shutout in her first appearance of the season.

Ross' second appearance of the season happened to come against Swift Current again at Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox, and once again Swift threw 37 shots on net to Notre Dame's 25.

This time around goals were put on the board in regulation after both Taylor Lind and Carissa Hogan ripped shots past Ross to work a 2-2 tie through 60 minutes.

The first overtime frame swung quickly in the Wildcats' favour with a bundle of scoring chances right in front of the Notre Dame net, but somehow none could cross the goal line and get an OT win for Swift Current.

"Well we really wanted to come out hard," said Hogan who, along with Lind, were the two forwards parked in front of the net looking to capitalize on the scoring chances. "Tay and I wanted to get that goal - we had lots of chances out there and we thought we really worked good together."

"We had I don't know how many, three or four really good chances - the right kids had the puck. Unfortunately, their goaltender made some remarkable saves," added Wildcats head coach Terry Pavely.

Neither team could solve each other's goaltender, as rookie Amaya Giraudier locked down Notre Dame's increased attack in the third and OT.

Heading to double-OT and heading to 3-on-3 play, both teams battled back-and-forth for three of the five minute period, but exactly with two minutes left, Hounds' forward Claire Nimegeers capitalized on a defensive zone breakdown, and put the puck past Giraudier on a breakaway for the double-OT winning goal in front of a rowdy Athol Murray College of Notre Dame student body.

"You can't win games with two goals, that's the unfortunate thing. The last time we played them we didn't score, this time we only scored two," Pavely said. "We have to find a way when we get upwards of 40 shots to get four goals, because unfortunately in our league if you score three goals you win a lot of games."

"We still didn't make it hard enough on her (Ross)," noted Pavely, as heading into this game, getting a steady amount of quality chances was a key for his team. "A lot of our long shots there wasn't traffic, we didn't get tips, so we really need to have a little bit more grit when we want to get to the net."

The 3-2 OT loss brings the Wildcats record to 4-4-0-2 on the season, while the Hounds are now 2-0-2-0 and only giving up an average of one goal per game.

An aspect the Wildcats will need to work on moving forward is the neutral zone game, according to Pavely, as well as the team's ability to stick to their style of hockey and maintain an identity.

"We seemed to give up a lot of odd-man rushes - they didn't make anything out of them but we didn't like the feel of the way the game was going with those odd-man rushes. Those are things we really have to make sure we tighten up," he said. "Also we don't want to be a team that plays back-and-forth all night long, we want to be a team that controls the puck, plays in the offensive zone, cycles some pucks, and we still haven't figured that out - we still want to go end-to-end and that's not a recipe for success."

The Wildcats now have a short turnaround before their next set of games, as they host the Prince Albert Northern Bears at Fairview West on Saturday and Sunday, just enough time to re-group and re-focus.

"I think we need to really communicate more and work harder in practices and coming out strong," the Rosetown-born Hogan said. "In the dressing room, we really need to focus on what we need to be working on when we're coming out and making sure we're coming out hard."
