The Hurricanes salute their fans following Saturday's game

The K-Motel Midget Hurricanes' season ended with a second-place finish in the SHA Midget AA Provincial Championship.

Taylor Cowie had two goals and Braden Wittmier and Parker Wall also scored for Swift Current in a 6-4 loss to the Saskatoon River Kings in game two of the final series Saturday night at the Fairview Arenas. Saskatoon claimed the championship with a total score of 12-5.

Despite the loss, Coach Scott Cassidy was proud of the team's work ethic throughout the season.

"That's 53 games played by our group this year, that's a lot of games together," he said. "We didn't know what to expect out of training camp, and if somebody said to finish in the provincial final at the end of the year, we would have been happy with the result. What a pleasure it was to coach these guys... everyone came together and it was a fun year."

The Hurricanes also finished in fourth place in their league, making it to their semi-finals, and Cassidy says overall, he was happy with how the team played.

"The AA program is such a nice one to be a part of with local talent, and with the fan support all year, and we really appreciate that" he said. "We couldn't ask for more from the kids, and we just had a great year."

The Hurricanes will graduate eight 17-year-olds from the team after this season.

Swift Current's last chance for a provincial minor hockey championship rests on the RE/MAX Midget Wild, who host Yorkton in the second game of their final series tonight at 6:00pm from the Fairview Arenas. Yorkton holds a 7-4 lead in the total-point series after the first game last week.

Meanwhile, the Tarpon Energy Atom Broncos picked up a 9-5 win over Yorkton at home Saturday to stay alive in the best-of-three league final series, and have forced a third and deciding game today in Yorkton.
