Hurricanes Hounds 570x426

A big two-game road trip for the Swift Current K-Motel Midget AA Hurricanes this week.

They're in Wilcox to play the Notre Dame Argos on Wednesday and in Moose Jaw on Thursday.

Swift Current is three points out of first place after two dominant victories over Weyburn and the Regina Wild on the weekend. They won those games by a combined score of 14-1.

"I thought the boys really came together as a team," said defenceman Trenton Zakaluzny. "Things were going our way. Starting working together a lot more, working in the dirty areas and just battling."

The Hurricanes were stung by a dramatic provincial loss against the Notre Dame Hounds last week on two last minute goals. They aren't letting that drag them down emotionally.

"Not so much," Zakaluzny said. "I think we kind of just thought of that as a thing out of our way. It was really crappy to lose like that, but we just kind of push it off to the side. We're going to focus on our league for the rest of our year and hopefully win the title."

Now down the stretch it'll be a tight battle for first place in the league standings. The Regina Capitals are three points up on the Hurricanes, but Swift Current has three games in hand.

"We've got to get all areas of the ice covered," Zakaluzny said. "I know we were scrambling in the neutral zone a lot lately and not really doing a lot of back checking. Just little areas. It's all coming back together we're starting to work a lot better in practices and things are coming together nicely."

For his part the young defenceman just returned to the lineup last week after nearly two months out with a knee injury.

"It's a work in progress," Zakaluzny said. "Still out of shape a lot. It's coming. Get a couple of games in and stuff and it'll come back. Gotta get my timing back. It'll all come slowly."

The Hurricanes are back home on Saturday night against Estevan at Fairview West Arena.
