Hurricanes Captain Jayden Roosen accepts the South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League Midget AA First Place Trophy for finishing first during the regular season.

The first place Swift Current K-Motel Hurricanes got the Midget AA playoffs off to a good start with a 5-4 win over the Notre Dame Argos last night.

The teams traded 9 goals through 40 minutes of play before the Hurricanes shut the door in the third.

Hurricanes forward Jayden Roosen says they played a more defensive game in the third.

We definitely didn't go quite as hard on the puck...we'd hang back a little higher. Maybe one guy go hard, the other two up a little higher and we held them off.”

Roosen had 2 goals for the Canes while Dalton Menke also scored twice.

"It was an entertaining game," said Hurricanes Coach Tim Tisdale, "Probably from a coaching standpoint it was a little more wide open than either team wanted to see. The effort was there, we played a little short... some extra guys had to come up and eat up some minutes. I was proud of the effort."

The Hurricanes take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series into Wilcox for game 2 on Friday.

In other local hockey, the Swift Current Bantam Colts opened the girls north provincial final with a 1-0 win over Saskatoon yesterday. Game 2 is next Sunday in Saskatoon.

The female Midget AA Titans beat the Prairie Storm 3-0 on Saturday to advance to the league semi-final.
