October 16/17 @ Estevan and Weyburn

Played the 1st place Estevan Bruins on Saturday afternoon and were humbled and brought back to earth to the tune of a 7-1 loss. Estevan stormed out of the gate with 2 goals in the first and carried through the second with four more goals while adding a seventh goal early in the third. Dalton Kaake scored the only Hurricane goal. Surprisingly the shots were close 27-26 in favour of Estevan. Ben Dancey took the loss in goal.

At Weyburn the Hurricanes were down 3-2 after one, 4-3 after two, but managed to get two quick in the third before Weyburn cashed in on a man advantage with 2 minutes remaining to tie the Hurricanes 5-5. Dalton, Menke, Hayden Johnston, Chace Nelson, Jayden Roosen, and Jordan Rempel scored for the Canes. Kyle Garland was in the pipes for Swift Current as the Hurricanes outshot Weyburn 33-28.

Head Coach Sean Chapman comments:

Points wise not such a successful weekend. We left a point on the table in Weyburn and clearly did not deserve anything Saturday afternoon against Estevan. I thought we carried the play for the majority of both games and were able to contain both teams in their end at times but our lack of urgency or courage in attacking the net and getting a little dirty to be rewarded with goals was ultimately our undoing. Consequently the other teams come out of their zone, attack our net and get rewarded on occasion. Our game is based on speed, pressure, and puck pursuit, if we can get it through our heads that playing on the perimeter in the offensive zone is not going to bring a lot of success and we start attacking the scoring areas, getting pucks on net, and crashing the net, we will find some scoring success. These guys are smart and they will figure it out. We have one of the youngest teams in the league again but I see a huge upside if we can figure some of this stuff out.

The Hurricanes close out the month of October with four more road games in October concluding an 11 game month which saw the Canes play three games at home and eight on the road.
