Colton Kroeker scored 2:53 into overtime as the Kootenay Ice handed the Swift Current Broncos their first road loss of the season 5-4 tonight.

In only their second loss of the season, the Broncos couldn't hold a 4-3 third period lead and dropped to 9-1-1-0.

“We didn't have everybody on board tonight,” said Broncos Associate Coach Ryan Smith. “We played so good last night in Lethbridge and left a little to be desired tonight.”

The Broncos were a little sloppy in their own zone on the night with turnovers leading directly to two Kootenay goals and six minor penalties providing opportunties for the other two.

“We complicated the game,” Smith said. “It's a simple game you play it simple or you play it hard. We didn't really do either of those. When we complicate things we try and do to much with the puck that's when you get yourself into trouble and that stalled us in our own end.”

Aleksi Heponiemi scored twice and had an assist, while Glenn Gawdin and Tyler Steenbergen each had a goal and two assists. Swift Current's top line scored 9 of their 10 goals on the weekend and were on the ice for the other.

The Broncos haven't had a goal from their second, third or fourth lines in the last four games.

“They have to create,” Smith said. “They have to get to spaces and they have to get pucks to the net. They need a break or bounce. I thought they played well yesterday... tonight they leflt something to be desired. The top line is carrying us right now offensively. They had four goals again tonight. We need to find somebody that can put the puck in the back of the net and it has to come from somebody other than those guys.”

Swift Current got off to a slow start with only four shots in the first fifteen minutes of the game and fell behind 1-0 on a Colton Veloso goal. They bounced back late in the period with two Heponiemi power play goals.

The teams traded goal in the second period on some sloppy play from both teams. Cale Fleury tied it on the power play with a hard one-timer for Kootenay. Gawdin gave the Broncos their lead back on a quick snap shot that snuck by Ice goaltender Baily Brkin and ended his night after allowing 3 goals on 13 shots.

The Ice tied the game right back up when Gilian Kohler took advantage of a Swift Current turnover, but Steenbergen notched his league leading 21st on the power play to restore the Broncos lead again.

Swift Current took a couple third period penalties that had them on their heels. Fleury struck again from the point through traffic to tie the game and eventually force overtime.

Kroeker's winner came shortly after Colby Sissons set Steenbergen up for a great chance that the WHL's best goal scorer just couldn't quite finish. Kootenay then turned the puck the other way and Alec Bear set Kroeker up for a shot that just snuck through Logan Flodell.

Swift Current went 3 for 4 on the power play and their only miss was on a 9 second opportunity. They went 5 for 6 overall this weekend and also scored on a delayed penalty.

Kootenay went 2 for 6 on the night and outshot the Broncos 36-26 overall. The Ice are now 4-2-1-0 at home this season.

The loss was both Swift Current's first on the road and Flodell's first loss in a Broncos jersey.

Swift Current is now off until they host Saskatoon on Friday and Medicine Hat next Saturday.
