A local talent had an impressive weekend at the Canadian National Taekwondo Championships in Calgary.

Zachary Smith come home with a pair of medals, winning gold in Poomsae (patterns) and a silver medal in Sparring at his first ever national championship.

Smith was able to battle back from difficult circumstances throughout the weekend.

Despite being knocked down by an illegal kick to the face, Smith continued to battle.

He erased a three point deficit to force an overtime round in the Sparring final.

However, after his first kick in the sudden death match was not scored by the judges, his opponent countered to score the winning point.

A gold and a silver medal appears to be a strong starting point for Smith at his first National event as he continues his young career.
