Indains Generic Bench

Four Swift Current Indians pitchers combined to hold the Regina Red Sox to 6 hits in a 3-1 Indians victory on Tuesday night.

"That was a good solid team effort," said Indians Coach Joe Carnahan. "It was a good baseball game against a good team. Both pitchers threw well. We came out with some key hits at opportune times and we kept them off the board playing solid D and pitching well."

Chris Haddeland got the win as he bounced back from a shaky start in Medicine Hat to allow only 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 4 in 6 innings of work.

"He threw well," Carnahan noted. "They're a typically good hitting team and he kept them off balance. That was the second time he threw against them. He had four pitchers going for strikes and you can't ask for more than that."

Haddeland then gave way to Will Holbrook, Taylor MacDonell and Cody Chartrand who shut the door the rest of the way. Chartrand got the save in his first relief appearance of the season after four starts.

"As far as late inning success he's probably the best guy that can come in and help us out in that department," Carnahan said. "He's a team guy and I can't speak enough of him. To have another option like that to come out of the bullpen and to have an opportunity to use him multiple times in a week is the right thing for us."

Chartrand was the most valuable pitcher award winner for the Indians last season as their closer.

The Indians struck first in the top of the 4th when Jake Gonzalez hit a double down the 3rd base line to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Swift Current cashed both runs before Regina got one back when Austin Drummonds scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning.

That's all the offence the Red Sox could muster.

Swift Current scored again in the top of the 6th when Dan Peakman's base hit drove Gonzalez in from second. Gonzalez finished 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Bryant Munoz also had a 2 hit game for the Indians.

The loss was the 4th straight for Regina and dropped the two-time defending champions to 9-10 on the season. Swift Current is 13-5 and leading the Central Division as they get set to host Melville on Wednesday night.

"They'll be able to hit," Carnahan said. "They can hit every year. They have a good roster and they're playing well."

First pitch is 7:05pm at Mitchell Field.
