The Swift Current Indians fell just shy of the WMBL Championship, dropping game four of the league final series 6-3 to the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Athletic Park on Saturday night.

Sheldon Daquioag and Jose Cruz had two RBI each and Bryce Feia got the victory on the mound as the Mavericks claimed their first WMBL Championship since 2003, winning the best of five series 3-1.

Eros Modena went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Indians, and Josh Johnson and Matt Spillman drove in a run each, with all of the scoring for Swift Current coming in the 7th inning while down 6-0.

"They beat us this series, and our guys battled," said coach Joe Carnahan. "I'm very proud of our guys and what they accomplished this year, and they did a great job. We had a great group of guys."

Zach Manley allowed five hits and struck out three over eight innings in relief of starter Fernando Pena, who struggled out of the gate with two hits and two runs allowed over the first four batters, and was chased from the game before even recording an out.

"[Manley's] been a horse for us all year, and he did an outstanding job again today, we just didn't get it done in the end," Carnahan added.

The Indians officially put the wraps on the season at their year-end banquet Sunday night with Josh Johnson named player of the year, Matt Spillman named the Playoff MVP, and Hunter Owen and Eros Modena named rookies of the year. Also Chad Schultz and Reilly Grose were named teammates of the year, Hunter Owen won the gold glove, and Zach Manley was pitcher of the year.
