The Swift Current Broncos have locked up another piece of their future.

They signed future power forward Cole Johnson to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

"I've always wanted to play in the (WHL)," Johnson said. "When I came here I wanted to see how things were here. I love it here in Swift. It's awesome... small community. I'm from a small community so it's just awesome."

The Broncos picked Johnson in the 2nd round, 34th overall, in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

Cole Johnson Interview"I'm a bigger guy that likes to use my body to be a power forward," he said. "I don't think college is quite that way, I don't think it's as physical and stuff. I just think I fit the WHL better than college."

The 5’10”, 190-pound product of Marwayne, AB tallied 40 goals and 31 assists for 71 points in 33 games played with the Lloydminster Heat of the AMBHL.

“He is a hard-nosed, physical, two-way forward with great finish,” said Assistant General Manager & Director of Player Personnel, Jamie Porter.  “He plays well in the defensive zone and possesses great character.”

Johnson has also been shortlisted for Team Alberta leading up to the 2013 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup.

He will now join fellow 2013 pick Tyler Steenbergen on the Broncos roster for the rookie game against Moose Jaw on Tuesday night. He's looking forward to his first taste of WHL pre-season action.

"Probably going to be a little bit nervous," Johnson said. "Try to stay level and do all the small things right... just (show them) that I'm a dirty, working hard forward that can get in the corners, finish plays, make plays, protect teammates and anything else."

Johnson and the rest of the promising Broncos rookies will take the ice at 7pm on Tuesday night at the Credit Union iPlex against a collection of young Warriors.
