A three goal first period proved to be enough Wednesday night for the Kabos Bantam 'AA' Broncos.

Playing game one in their best of three league championship series against the Sask Valley Vipers, the Broncos skated to a 3-1 victory.

Just over five minutes into the game, Keagon Little put Swift Current on the board first.

Little scored his third goal of the playoffs, putting the Broncos out in front 1-0.

The Vipers were able to respond though.

Sask Valley's leading scorer in both the regular season and playoffs, Josh Pillar beat Broncos goalie Jacob Herman with 8:45 left to play in the opening frame.

However, shortly after Pillar's game tying goal, Viper's defenceman Daylan Weigel was issued a two minute minor and ten minute game misconduct for checking from behind.

With the penatly dying down, the Broncos made sure not to waste the opportunity.

Bronco's Defenceman Joe Arntsen played a physical game all night and also tallied the game winning goal

Swift Current defenceman Joe Arntsen scored his first goal of the post-season with 18 seconds left on the man-advantage to regain the Broncos lead.

Then, just 57 seconds later, Reed Jacobson gave the Broncos some breathing room.

Swift Current's leading scorer this season beat Vipers goalie Brodie Guenther, chasing Guenther from the game, as Sask Valley pulled him in favour of Matt Hennessey.

The score remained 3-1 for the Broncos as they two teams headed into the first intermission, with Swift Current outshooting the Vipers 16-10.

In the second both teams had a few chances but were unable to capitalize.

Herman turned away all seven shots he faced, while Hennessey made eight stops in the Vipers goal.

With the score still 3-1 in favour of the Broncos entering the third, Sask Valley began to turn up the heat.

Trying to get their second goal of the game, the Vipers fired shot after shot towards Herman, who was equal to the task.

Despite Sask Valley outshooting the Broncos 14-2 in the final frame, Herman held his ground stopping all 14 shots, leading Swift Current to the 3-1 win.

With the victory the Broncos take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series and pull within one victory of being crowned the Saskatchewan Bantam 'AA' Hockey League champions.

Swift Current will get their first chance at claiming the title on Saturday when they travel to Warman for game two.

If necessary, game three will be played back in Swift Current on Tuesday.

With Sask Valley being the host team for the 2017 Western Canada Bantam 'AAA' Championship, both Swift Current and Sask Valley have qualified for the tournament.
