The countdown is on and now at one month until the start of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Among athletes showcasing their talent in front of the world from February 9-25 is a Swift Current resident who won't be representing Canada, but her home nation of Scotland as part of Team Great Britain.

Kelly Schafer, originally from Dundee, Scotland, is set to head into her third Olympic Games as part of the Women's Curling team for Team GB.

"It's pretty exciting for anybody to be involved in the Olympic Games, but to be going back for the third time really is special," Schafer said. "Having moved to Canada, I wasn't sure that I'd have another Olympic experience, so I kind of grabbed this one with both hands."

Schafer's first Olympics was in Turin, Italy in 2006. As the Third under Skip Rhona Martin, Wood and Team GB finished fifth. Her second showing was at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver as the Second under Skip Eve Muirhead - Team GB finished seventh.

Once again playing alongside Muirhead, Schafer will see herself in a different position once again, serving as the team's Alternate.

"What's different this time around I would say is that we're really just focusing on our training and our play, and not trying to worry too much about the outcome this time," Schafer shared. "I wouldn't say we necessarily did that in previous years, so it kind of takes all the anxiety out of it, because we're just kind of focusing on what we need to do to get us ready for the games."

Although Schafer was not on Team GB in Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics, Britain is coming off of a Bronze medal after a 6-5 win over Switzerland, while the Canadians claimed gold in a 6-3 win over Sweden.

Looking to 2018, Schafer says she's hoping to have support from her new place of residence when she's across the Pacific Ocean in mid-February.

"I think there are a few silent GB-flag wavers, I know that - they've told me already," Schafer said laughing. "I hope that I'll have another 18,000 fans kind of cheering for Team GB over there, which is a really cool concept as well."

The Women's Curling round-robin draw gets underway Tuesday, February 13, at 11 p.m. Saskatchewan time after the completion of the newly-added Mixed Doubles competition.

Schafer is currently training with her teammates ahead of the trek to Pyeongchang, South Korea.
