Max Kirkpatrick and his rink won the Innovation Credit Union Fall Superleague championship at the Swift Current Curling Club in December

Max Kirkpatrick starts a run toward a trip to the Brier today as his rink from the Swift Current Curling Club competes in the SaskTel Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championship in Melfort.

The rink, which includes Kirkpatrick, Shaun Meachem, Jeff Chambers and Shawn Hiebert, qualified by winning the wild card pre-qualification spot based on Sask Curling Tour and Canadian Team Rankings, and have been preparing for provincials since.

Kirkpatrick says in their second year together, they feel they have made strides.

"We're gelling as a team, we're making less mistakes, and getting to know each other a little better, so the progress is nice, and hopefully we can put it all together this weekend," he said. "You can get away with not having to curl 100% all the time if you miss in the right way, but if you're hitting or drawing against two or three, you have to make those shots."

The Kirkpatrick rink will open the triple-knockout event in its first draw this afternoon at 3:00pm, when they take on 1990 champion Jamie Schneider.

"In the last couple of years, we curled him a couple of times and actually won both times," Kirkpatrick said. "I think that will help our confidence level, hopefully not too much, but it's not like we're going to be intimidated by them. We played them lots before and had some success.

The Tankard continues through Sunday where the champions will represent Saskatchewan at the Tim Hortons Brier in Edmonton on March 2-10.
