The Max Kirkpatrick Rink warms up before their game at the SaskTel Southern Men's Curling Playdowns

A local rink is off to a good start at the SaskTel Southern Men's Curling Playdowns in Swift Current.

The Max Kirkpatrick foursome opened the event with a big 8-4 win in nine ends over Steven Slupski out of Moose Jaw. Kirkpatrick went into a big lead with an open hit for four in the fifth, and held off Slupski for the victory to stay alive in the A-Event.

Kirkpatrick returns to action tomorrow morning where he faces Jason Krupski from Whitewood, who needed extra ends to beat Regina's Brad Law 7-5 in his game. Other draw one games had Regina's Al Schick beating Alan Batty of Assiniboia 7-5, and Brent Gedak of Estevan beat Mark Weiss of Regina 8-1.

The other local rink, Rod Quinton, takes on Chris Busby of Regina in Draw Two action tonight at 7:00pm from the Swift Current Curling Club at the Credit Union iplex.
