A pair of Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats will be wearing a different set of colours over the course of the Wildcats annual preseason tournament this weekend.

Goalie Amaya Giraudier and forward Baylee Kirwan will be a part of Team Sask's U16 team over the hockey showcase. Joining U16 Team Sask among the Female Midget AAA teams is U16 Team Manitoba.

"I'm really excited - it looks like we have a good group of girls, so hopefully we come out strong and beat Manitoba," said Kirwan. Hopefully I play good and it opens up some opportunities for the future - who knows."

The opportunity to get noticed certainly is there for the two Wildcats, as a pile of scouts and reps from post-secondary teams in Canada and the United States will be in attendance.

"It's such an awesome experience," said Giraudier. "It's pretty fun and I can't wait. It's tremendous what we have here - it's such great exposure."

Wildcats head coach Terry Pavely shared more on just what a good performance at the U16 Team Sask Showcase can mean for his two players.

"You've got the best players from two provinces that are in the U16 age group," he explained. "With the recruiting getting younger and younger, and teams trying to get a head start on other teams, if any of those kids have a good weekend, it gets them on the radar with teams. Teams start to watch them more, so it's just a good opportunity for them to be recognized as one of the top players in the province, and get schools to start taking notice of them early."

Both Giraudier and Kirwan are coming into their second SFMAAAHL season, and are looking to build off solid rookie campaigns last year.

Kirwan notched 20 points (10 G, 10 A), playing in all 28 regular-season contests. The point-total for the Gull Lake product was fourth-highest on the team.

As she heads into the 2018-19 season, Kirwan says she feels she's gotten her feet under her at this level, and looks for an increase in production.

"The speed of the AAA level has helped me. I think mostly just getting used to the speed, picking up passes at full speed, and delivering them," she explained. "I'm hoping I can score more - bear down on my chances, and maybe get some time on the powerplay."

Meanwhile Giraudier made 18 appearances with the Wildcats last season, and the netminder played beyond her years.

The 2003-born Giraudier racked up a .914 save-percentage and a 2.09 goals-against-average in the regular season. Those numbers put the Assiniboia product in the upper level of goalies in the league.

She added a 1.83 goals-against-average and .937 save-percentage over three playoff appearances as well.

"I think I've gotten more mature, and I've started to work more with mental - I did a lot of on-ice, off-ice training," Giraudier said. "I want to keep consistent this year - try not to go up and down, and try to maintain control in the net."

Giraudier, Kirwan, and Team Sask take on the Pembina Valley Hawks at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow at Fairview West in the tournament opener.
