The Community of Leader will be getting their spot in the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame this summer.

While the town no longer has a senior team, Assistant Administrator for Leader, Erin Romanuik, said there's still a lot of interest in the sport.

"All we have in Leader is minor ball." Romanuik noted, "We don't currently have a senior team, they folded several years ago."

The senior baseball team was established in 1918 and went through a series of name changes, including the Leader Huskies, Tigers, Flyers and Barons. The team played through a few different leagues and often hosted baseball tournaments for neighboring communities, Eatonia, Kindersley, Eston and Mendham.

Romanuik said they now only have minor ball teams, including a U12 boys team, U10 through to U16 girls teams, parent pitch and t-ball. "We have our minor ball committee, they work pretty hard to spreading the word of baseball, giving the kids the opportunity to attend other clinics that are around in our area. We are currently working on getting a ball clinic in town, put on by some players that were on a National ball team. We are always promoting all ages to get involved in ball."

A few of the minor teams compete in the same league as Kindersley, while others are in the Sandhills Softball League.

Leader Mayor, Craig Tondevold, will be accepting the award on behalf of the community. The Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame Banquet will take place in Battleford on August 18th.
