The Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires capped off their round-robin schedule at the Mac's Midget AAA Tournament with a methodical win - their second straight.

The Legionnaires piled the goals in the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes' net to the tune of a 7-2 win.

Swift Current jumped on the board first as forward Rin Beny scored just 1:31 into the game, taking a feed from Mason Strutt for his second goal of the tournament.

"We knew we kind of had to come out hard," Beny said. "It's an important game for us because we're still in the [playoff] mix, so we kind of just did everything we could to win. Goals were really important for us so we did really well offensively and put some pucks in the net."

Rookie forward Reed Jacobson added to the lead, scoring with just under three minutes remaining in the opening frame.

Heading into the first intermission, however, the Legionnaires led 2-1. The Jr. Hurricanes answered Jacobson's mark just 50 seconds later to close the period.

The game ended up tied just minutes into the second period, as Carolina scored their second and final goal off the stick of Garrett Auriene. The forward scored both goals in the game for the Jr. Hurricanes.

"We're not panicking like they're taking it to us, but we know we had to dig in there and get going," said Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen. "That's been our mindset, and we're learning to do that more and more. The pushback is the most important in those situations."

The tying goal came 1:48 into the middle period, but the Legionnaires pushed back as Evjen had hoped, not letting that 2-2 score last long.

Just 30 seconds later defenceman Lucas Ochitwa found forward Rhett Gibson, who put the Legionnaires ahead with his first goal, and point, of the tournament.

Swift Current capitalized on the momentum shift by doubling the lead just over two minutes later. Rookie blue-liner Mac Gross scored his first of the tournament on assists from Ty Muench and Beny.

The lead grew to a comfortable score of 5-2 with 8:26 remaining in the second on the first of two goals for recently-added rookie forward Riley Dekowny. Ochitwa was credited with the assist, as was AP defenceman Hendrik DeKlerk.

Dekowny added his second unanswered to open the third period, connecting on feeds from defenceman Jaden Wake and fellow rookie Chase Gallant at the 16:51 mark.

However, with the score now 6-2, Dekowny's bid for the natural hat-trick was ended on the game's final goal - Beny scored his second of the game to give the Legionnaires the 7-2 win. Jacobson and Kersey Reich assisted on the shot.

Rookie scoring was prominent in the game, with seven first-years finding the stat sheet.

Dekowny (2 G) and Jacobson (1 G, 1 A) led the way with multi-point efforts, while Gibson (1 G), Gross (1 G), DeKlerk (1 A), Gallant (1 A) and Reich (1 A) all had points. Dekowny, Gibson, DeKlerk and Gallant all had their first points of the tournament in the win.

"They all played very well, it was nice to see some of them get their first goals," said the veteran Beny of his rookie teammates. "They all did their part and helped contribute to our win. It was nice to see them get rewarded for their hard work."

Swift Current ended the game out-shooting Carolina 42-24, with netminder Steven Duchscher making 22 saves.

The win gives the Legionnaires a 2-1-1 record in the round robin, which could put them in the playoffs if the outcomes of two games go Swift's way.

The Legionnaires need the Hungarian National U18 team (1-2) to beat the St. Albert Raiders (2-1) in their final game. If that happens, Swift then needs the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs (3-0) to win over the Saskatoon Contacts (1-1-1) to advance to playoffs.

"We're all together right now just waiting on it, and I guess we'll see what happens. We gave our best effort, so we'll see," said Beny, whose head coach said patience will be key as they wait.

"It's out of our hands right now," said Evjen.
