Rounding out a weekend of three games in three days, the Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires snagged a single point in a playoff-like Sunday contest with the Saskatoon Blazers.

After wins of 7-1 over the Notre Dame Argos and 7-4 against the Saskatoon Contacts, the Legionnaires fell 2-1 to the Blazers in a shootout in the Bridge City.

It was a game that saw little wiggle room between the two teams jostling for the lead.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first period, with the first goal coming with 8:15 left in the second.

Reed Jacobson took a feed from Boston Bird and AP forward Kalan Lind, as he gave the Legionnaires the lead.

The Blazers responded 1:34 into the third period on a powerplay goal from Zach Gabruch, in a game that saw both sides play a clean contest with just two powerplays apiece.

"That's the way it is, there's not many penalties because both teams played pretty well positionally," said Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen. "There's just not much room. The penalty-killing was good, the powerplays were good, but it's a real chess match out there - a tough game."

After regulation ended, neither team could solve the opposition's netminder on two OT shots aside, as a shootout was needed.

Josh Nagy put the Blazers on the board first in the shootout, and that was all Saskatoon needed.

Their second and third shooters couldn't capitalize, nor could Swift's Jacobson, Bird, and Mason Strutt.

"Well I was really happy with tonight's effort, because it was a game you've got to dig really deep into," Evjen explained. "You've got to block shots when you're already sore, and you've got to find ways to will your mind into competing and playing every shift - fighting for every inch. I thought we did a great job of that over 65 minutes. You really couldn't ask for any more out of your team than what they gave today... a shootout... a flip of the coin. We lost this time, but you can't take anything away from what we did - I was really happy with the way our team responded today."

Ethan Hein made 29 saves in the shootout loss, rounding out a weekend where the netminder stopped 68 of 70 shots thrown his way.

Up next for the Legionnaires are five home games at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex over a ten-day stretch. The heavy home schedule rounds out the first half of the year, and serves as a chance for Swift Current to prep their game for the Mac's Tournament in Calgary, which starts Boxing Day.

"We need to win hockey games if we want to stay at the top, and we've got to keep playing good hockey, and collecting points. It's really important - it sets you up for the second half. We're playing right now to get ourselves prepared for the Mac's tournament, to give ourselves every opportunity to win it. It's really important, we don't have time to say we're playing hard until the break - we're playing hard for that break. It's really important that we keep making steps. "

The 16-5-0-1 Legionnaires host the Saskatoon Contacts (11-9-0-0) for games on December 8-9 at the iPlex.

Saturday's contest has an 8 p.m. start time.
