The Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires rebounded with two wins over the weekend after having their previous eight-game win streak snapped last Wednesday.

The Legionnaires opened play on the road on Saturday against the Beardys Blackhawks with a 3-2 victory.

Beardys opened scoring on the power play over halfway through the first period on the power play, but with 4:23 left in the opening frame Jacob Piller scored to keep the game tied 1-1 after one.

The two teams were tied 2-2 after two as Piller scored 29 seconds into the middle frame, and Beardys answered with 1:30 remaining.

The final goal of the game came in the opening minute of the third period as Hunter Lamb was credited with the game-winner for the Legionnaires at the 19:01 mark.

"We played probably not our cleanest game, but we played a decent road game," said head coach Darren Evjen. "We took the lead twice - they caught up to us the first time, but the second time we managed to play a good, sound defensive game and get the win."

Cody Levesque stopped 26 of 28 shots for the W.

Sunday brought a road contest against the Battlefords Stars, and a higher-scoring affair. The Legionnaires won 7-4 with seven different goal-scorers lighting the lamp.

Owen Ozar, Mac Gross, and Ty Muench scored in the first period, Chase Gallant scored in the second, and Piller, Riley Dekowny, and Rin Beny added third-period tallies.

For both Gallant and Dekowny, the Sunday goals were each the first of their Sask Midget AAA Hockey League careers.

"Guys are always happy when teammates score their first goal. It gets everybody else going, but it's exciting because everybody knows when you're a young guy in good leagues it's hard to score. Once you get that first one it kind of takes the monkey off your back and you're happy for your teammate."

Dekowny, a call-up from the Swift Current Abbey Resources Midget AA Broncos, scored his first in his 12th appearance with the Legionnaires.

For Gallant, an import who played Midget AA in Saskatoon the first half of the season, the goal in his eighth game with Swift Current may have been as good of a team-bonding activity as any.

"You just feel like you're contributing more. They all contribute in a lot of ways but, at the end of the day, players feel they contribute the most when they're getting points," Evjen added. "So for him to score a goal like that in a tight part of the game, it was something that exactly makes you feel like you're a part of something - that you're helping."

Steven Duchscher made 31 saves in the win for the Legionnaires, who were led offensively over the two-game weekend by Lamb (1 G, 5 A) and Piller (3 G, 1 A).

Swift now heads into a busy stretch of four home games in five days, starting Friday.

"Well it's a heavy part of our schedule, that's for sure. But again, you break it down to one game at a time... it's going to be a lot of hockey, but at this time of year too you want to be playing lots of hockey."

The Legionnaires (23-10-0-3) host the Beardys Blackhawks 8 p.m. on Friday at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
