It's nearly been a week, and Team Sask's first-ever WHL Cup win is still making Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires rookie forward Jakin Lawrence grin from ear-to-ear.

"It's really cool - cool to be the first, for sure. Lots of fun too," said Lawrence, who traded in the yellow and navy of the Legionnaires for his province's colours over the tournament last week and weekend in Calgary.

The Rosetown product had three points in five games for Team Sask, who doubled up Team Manitoba 4-2 in the final to hoist the WHL Cup.

The tournament started out as a struggle for Lawrence and Team Sask, who were winless in the round-robin of the four-team tournament.

But, up against top-seeded - and undefeated - Team Alberta in the semi-finals, a will to win brought just that - a 5-3 result over their neighbours to the west.

"Just a strong belief. The boys knew that we could win, and had the belief throughout the whole game," Lawrence said.

That fearless optimism is understandably the main takeaway from the experience for Lawrence.

"That's the biggest thing we could take out of it. Everyone's got to believe you can always win - doesn't matter who you're playing against."

Lawrence has since rejoined the Legionnaires this week - a team he's scored three goals in 11 games for so far this season.

A tough weekend test is ahead for Lawrence and the Legionnaires, who head into the first games of November on a four-game winning streak.

The Legionnaires (7-5-0-0) host the Saskatoon Contacts (9-3-0-1) for two games at Fairview West.

"The boys have got to be physical," Lawrence said. "They're a physical team, they're a big team. We've got to go outwork them the whole game."

The first of two games in the weekend set hits Fairview West Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
