Zac Mackay

The new coach of the Midget AAA Home Hardware Legionnaires is pleased to have Broncos prospect Zac Mackay on his roster.

"Zac is an impact player and we're happy to have him back," said Jason Johns. "We're sad for him that he didn't make the Broncos, but I think this is going to be a great help... to develop him for next year."

The Broncos re-assigned Mackay on Sunday. The Swift Current product will play a top line role with the Legionnaires, but staying in the city allows him to practice or play with the Broncos as needed.

"It's a win-win situation," Johns said. "It's going to be a great year for all of us."

Broncos Coach and General Manager Mark Lamb didn't consider where Mackay was playing midget when he made his decision.

"Is it good that he's here? Absolutely we can watch him," Lamb said. "That didn't come into play... it wouldn't matter if it was here or somewhere else."

Lamb had Mackay in a bottom six role that would include penalty killing. However, he views the 2010 bantam draft pick as someone with offensive instincts they want to nurture.

"He had a really good camp here," said Broncos Coach/GM Mark Lamb. "I think he would lose a lot of his offensive development if we kept him around."

The 16-year-old scored 30 points in 37 games with the Legionnaires last season.

Mackay and the Legionnaires visit the Beardy's Blackhawks on the weekend. The Broncos host Brandon on Wednesday. The Eagle 94.1 FM broadcasts every Broncos game live starting with the pre-game show thirty minutes before puck drop.
