It was somewhat of a methodical sweep of a pair of opponents at home this weekend for the Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires, as they earned wins over both the Moose Jaw Generals and Notre Dame Argos.

Game 1

Saturday night at the iPlex, the Legionnaires showcased their defensive prowess in a 2-0 shutout win.

Swift Current jumped on the board with 1:35 left in the first period, as Boston Bird took feeds from Reed Jacobson and Lucas Ochitwa for the eventual game-winner.

The Legionnaires then scored the game's final goal just 2:11 into the second period, when Bird and Ochitwa set up Jacobson on the man-advantage.

The shot-clock was an even 26-26 on the board, with Ethan Hein recording the shutout in net for Swift.

"I thought the chances were about 20-8," said Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen on the quality opportunities in the game. "If you can keep teams down to eight chances, you give yourself a chance to win."

Swift Current finished the game 1-for-7 on the PP, to the Generals 0-for-5.

Game 2

The Legionnaires came out flying early on Sunday in a 3-2 win over the Notre Dame Argos.

Swift piled 21 shots on net to the Argos 11, leading 2-1 through the first period of play.

Notre Dame jumped ahead early in the game, though Swift Current responded with a short-handed mark by Maguire Scheidt, and an even-strength blast from Mason Strutt to pull ahead.

Swift Current then used the eventual game-winner in the second period. Mac Gross buried one 1:21 into the second period on passes from Chase Gallant and Ochitwa.

"It was a great play by everyone," said Gross. "My D partner Lucas passed it down to Gally, and I saw him coming down the wide side, thought he was going to shoot, ready for the pad pass, and that's what happened - I just put it home."

The score held at 3-1 until the final minutes of play, when the Argos drew within one with 1:18 remaining.

A couple of chances were created by Notre Dame with the net empty, but nothing found its way past Jacob Herman after that.

"That happens, it's hockey," said Evjen on the late push. "If it was easy, everybody would do it."

Herman finished the game with 24 saves on 26 shots, while the Legionnaires pumped 44 on net at the other end.

"I really liked the way we played this weekend, I thought we were really good," said Evjen. "We defending very well, we created chances in both games. The puck didn't go in like it can some days, but everything else, our faceoffs, everything was really good in our game. We've got to feel good where we're at right now going into the Regina game. If we keep creating those chances, they'll go in. I thought we stuck with the game and did a lot of good things today. We skated, we never really had any lulls in our game, and we played good."

Of note, Gross' goal was his first of the season in just his third game this year.

After suffering an upper body injury in his first appearance September 22 against the Beardys Blackhawks, the defenceman was able to make his way back and play in both tilts this weekend.

"It was good to be back with all the guys, practicing for a couple weeks - tough not being able to play, but once I got back out there, it's just good to be out with the boys and just trying to get the rust off and ready for the Mac's," said Gross. "It was obviously tough to get back in there. It's never easy when you've been out for three months, but just having quick shifts and just playing with a good D partner just makes it a lot easier."

The Legionnaires (19-6-1-0) now wrap up the 2018 portion of their league schedule on Tuesday, when they welcome the Regina Pat Canadians (16-4-2-2) to town.

"It's going to be what the Mac's is all about. They're a good team, we're a good team," said Gross. "We just need to come in there, play our game, play fast - they're a fast team. If everybody dives in, I think we can win the game."

Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
