A weekend split on the road for the Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires started low, but certainly ended on a high note.

In Battlefords for a Saturday night match-up with the Stars, the Legionnaires fell behind quickly, as three out of Battlefords' first six shots made their way past goalie Cody Levesque.

After the trio of goals in the first 7:33 of the game, the Legionnaires had to turn to backup netminder Steven Duchscher for the duration of the game.

"We kind of got on our heels, and I don't think we were ready to play," said Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen. "Once we took a timeout and started playing, we battled back."

The Legionnaires responded quickly out of the timeout, scoring just 42 seconds later on the power-play off of an Owen Ozar shot.

Continuing the momentum swing, Legionnaires forward Hunter Lamb potted the team's second goal on the man advantage to cut the lead to 3-2 through the first 20 minutes.

Ozar buried another one for his second of the game to tie up the contest midway through the second, but it wouldn't take long for the Legionnaires to get doubled up.

Battlefords beat Duchscher with 2:12 remaining, and then again on the power-play with 36 seconds left in the period.

Then, just 1:12 into the third, Battlefords added their sixth of the game to take a 6-3 lead.

Swift did manage to claw back to within one with two more goals by Lamb, to give him the hat trick on the night, but penalties prevented an opportunity for a comeback.

Three penalties in the last 9:18 of the game cause Swift to be a man short for a hair over five of those minutes, as the Legionnaires fell 6-5.

"You can't win playing that way - you have to play the right way in hockey, and if you try to cheat the game you won't win most nights, and we realize that," said the Legionnaires' head coach. "We're a team that's trying to grow and get better - for us, it was another lesson learned, and we'll just move on from it and try to be better every night."

Not wanting to let the weekend slip away from his squad, Evjen says his team responded very well to the loss.

"We have a group that really wants to win and really wants to be a strong organization," he said. "They were upset about the way they lost, and they came in and took control of the situation (on Sunday) - they played a great game."

The Midget AAA squad did just that, playing their best offensive game of the 2017-18 regular season through the first eight games.

In the Sunday afternoon contest at Schroh Arena against the Saskatoon Contacts, seven Legionnaires players found the back of the net as Swift Current flipped on the cruise control in a 10-2 win.

Jerzy Orchard shone in the game recording a hat trick, along with three assists as well - he led the team with seven points this past weekend.

Rin Beny had two goals and an assist, and Lamb had another three-point game with a goal and two assists.

Goalie Steven Duchscher got the start in game two, recording 46 saves on 48 shots on the stat sheet.

"Today was a big day for him to come in and get a big win in his hometown," said the netminder's head coach. "We did win 10-2, but there's always a point in a game where the goalie needs to make a couple of early saves, which he did. That allowed us to get on the score sheet and get some separation."

The Legionnaires don't have to wait long for another crack at the Contacts, as they're back in Saskatoon against the team on Thursday, October 20.
