The Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires fended off a fine effort late from the Moose Jaw AAA Warriors Saturday night, jumping back in the win column with a 4-3 victory at Mosaic Place.

Coming off a tough 6-1 loss to the Saskatoon Blazers the previous night at the iPlex, the Legionnaires ran into a well-rested Warriors squad.

Swift Current struck first in the game, as AP forward and Bantam AA Broncos captain Kalan Lind put home his first-career SMAAAHL goal with 7:44 to go in the first period.

"I just got the puck the down low, we got the puck up to the point, and I was just thinking to get in front of the net," said Lind. "Once I saw that puck come on the ice, I caught it, went back to my forehand, and just tried to jam that in. Won that battle and put it in."

"Everyone was pretty happy - they were all saying 'it's about time,'" Lind laughed.

The Warriors countered just 41 seconds later to carry a 1-1 draw into the first intermission.

It was all Legionnaires in the second period, at least in the goal department. Both teams had quality chances, but strikes from Cash Arntsen and Eric Robbie made it a somewhat comfortable 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Just 2:44 into the third period, Riley Dekowny wristed one top left corner to go up by three - an officially comfortable margin that didn't end up lasting too long at all.

The Warriors responded 3:10 later, adding another 1:27 after that to put the Legionnaires back on their heels, clinging to a one-goal lead.

"In the third period we're playing the right way, and we just get a little bit soft, play a little easy, and before you know it it's 4-3," said head coach Darren Evjen.

Despite an onslaught of opportunities over the final 12 minutes of the game, including a lengthy stint with the Warriors' net empty, Swift Current managed to keep any more pucks from sneaking over the goal line.

"Credit to our guys, they really dug in to get the win and finish the game off for two minutes of 6-on-5 - did a really good job, starting with our goaltender," said Evjen.

Goalie Justin Dueck secured his third-straight win, stopping 37 of 40 shots in the effort, including 15 of 17 in the third period alone.

The win saw a steady response on special teams as well - after allowing four goals on seven attempts against the Blazers Friday night, the Legionnaires held Moose Jaw scoreless on three powerplays.

"Our penalty-kill was really good tonight I thought. That made a big difference - we stayed out of the box a lot better tonight," Evjen said.

Back to Lind though, who came into the game with just an assist over 12 combined games between this season and the previous as an AP with the Legionnaires.

Saturday's showing was head and shoulders above the rest for the 14-year-old from Shaunavon, and not just because he found the back of the net.

"I thought I was getting the pucks deep and working. Jakin (Lawrence) and [Jaxon Martens] were really coming with me, we were getting up there, forcing pucks, creating turnovers, and getting pucks to the net which was really helping us," said Lind on what was working out there.

"I thought Lind was good, he's a good player - he's very heady," said Evjen. "The thing that gets unnoticed maybe is how competitive he is. He's hard player - he'll take a run at you, and he'll beat you on a puck play. He's just a good, smart player."

The Bantam Broncos' captain has an outrageous 29 goals and 47 points in 10 games this year, and said he's still trying to get acclimated fully at the Midget AAA level.

"It's tough transitioning from Bantam to Midget. When you're passing the pucks, you've got to pass it in front of them and not right on their tape, because they're going a lot faster than Bantam," Lind said.

Lind's best showing so far at the AAA level helped the Legionnaires earn their 11th win of the season, as they now have a week off before their next game.

The Legionnaires aren't back in action until November 24 when they're in Notre Dame battling the Hounds.

"Right now, you get the win, enjoy the day (Sunday), and then start working again," said Evjen. "When you get those weeks it's kind of nice, you can work on everything. I'll look at the games from the weekend, and then we'll put a game plan together on what we think we need to work on, and go from there."

The Legionnaires (11-8-0-0) and Hounds (9-4-0-0) face off Sunday, November 24 at 3 p.m. from Duncan McNeill Arena.
