Adam Lowry

Swift Current Broncos Forward Adam Lowry is the WHL's Scholastic Player of the Year.

The 16-year-old was presented the award on Wednesday at the WHL Awards banquet in Edmonton.  He had 15 goals and 34 points in his rookie season, and holds a 92% average at the Comp High School.

Lowry says a lot of people helped him receive this honour.  "The teachers really helped out; the coaches gave me a great opportunity coming into camp to make the team, and not only make the team, but play pretty good minutes.  They put me in situations where I could be successful; they didn't ask too much of me; they allowed me to play they way I can play.  The team really helped me out, same with my parents.

The award may not have the prestige of a League MVP or Player of the Year Award, but Lowry says he's proud all the same.  He adds, "My brother's bugging me, saying I am the nerd of the league, but it is definitely an honour.  Some people say the Sportsmanlike Award is for the big babies, but [Moose Jaw Warriors Forward] Jason Bast won that, and he's a pretty darn good player, so anytime you can get recognized for your accomplishments, not only on the ice, but off the ice, it's huge."

Lowry is the first Bronco to win the Scholastic Award since Ashley Buckberger in 1992.
