It was the one that got away in more ways than one for the Swift Current Indians on Monday.

The Indians failed to score in with runners on base all game and gave up the only runs they allowed all game after throwing errors in a 2-1 loss to Medicine Hat.

The loss ended Swift Current's winning streak at 7 games.

"It was a tough game," said Indians Coach Joe Carnahan. "Battled all the way to the end. Sean (Callegari) pitched outstanding today giving us seven strong innings. We had a lot of opportunities we just didn't cash in." Full Interview with Joe Carnahan

Medicine Hat's first run came as third baseman Joel Lutz was able to make it to 2nd base on a base hit when Indians outfielder Bryant Munoz bobbled his throw. Lutz then scored on back-to-back ground outs.

Swift Current responded in the 5th by putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with only one out. Danny Clifford drove in Alex Schultz to tie the game at 1, but the Indians then couldn't cash in another run with runners on the corners and still only a single out.

"When you play a quality pitching staff like Medicine Hat has when you do get those opportunities you've got to scratch and claw and find any wa you can to push that runner across," Carnahan said. "We just weren't capable of doing that today.

The Mavericks pulled ahead when Cody Chartrand came on in reliefin the 8th inning. He allowed a hit and a walk before Indians 3B Mario Sanchez threw away the ball on a Mitch Frey bunt and Zach Zdanowic scored from 2nd base.

Chartrand took the loss for the Indians in relief.

Neither runs the Indians gave up were earned runs for their pitchers as the league leading Mavericks beat the Tribe for the third time in three tries this summer.

Callegari went 7 innings allowing only an unearned run and 3 hits, while striking out 7 and walking only 2. Medicine Hat starter Kyle McKay had difficulty with his control as he walked 4 batters, but he was able to consistently get himself out of trouble.

Swift Current has a rare few days off now before heading to Weyburn on Thursday.

Our next broadcast of Indians baseball is on Friday when they visit Regina on The Eagle 94.1 FM and the Indians aren't back at Mitchell Field again until next Monday night when they play their final home game of the regular season.
