A short-handed Abbey Resources Midget AA Broncos squad pushed the Regina Vics to the brink of elimination in the provincial capital last night.

The Midget AA Broncos secured a 5-2 win in Game 2, and a 2-0 series lead over the Vics in their Provincial semi-final series.

With leading scorers Ryland Hornung and Beau Larson out of the lineup with injuries, head coach Todd Hornung said the win was a testament to the team's depth.

“We don’t so much worry about who’s on defensive zone draws, or which line can produce on the powerplay. We’ve been blessed in a way that when a certain line’s going, we put them out, and they seem to be the ones that produce for us on certain nights," said Hornung. "As a coach, you can’t ask for much more. Our three sets of D, all our lines, and our AP kids that come up and contribute just as well – we’re very fortunate.”

Matt Christianson sent the hats flying of Swift Current fans in attendance with a hat-trick in the game, with other goals coming from Quinn Patenaude and Brock Oberle.

“I just think our line was clicking, pucks were going our way, and just getting pucks on net, doing everything we can," said Christianson, noting the Vics tried to set a physical tone, though it was matched quickly by Swift.

"They came pretty hard and we had to keep going - just keep getting pucks low, keep forechecking hard, and we’d start wearing them down, and keep going from there."

It was a thorough effort for the Midget AA Broncos, who went a blistering 3-for-6 on the powerplay, while not allowing much push back from the Vics.

"They just responded with a game of just work ethic. We threw three lines on them like usual, and kept pushing the pace, and got rewarded. That’s what we’ve had all year - different guys at certain times taking charge and leading the way for us."

Justin Dueck earned the W in net for Swift Current, who looks to work a sweep in Game 3 back on home ice.

In front of what's sure to be a packed Fairview West arena, the Midget AA Broncos host the Regina Vics Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

"If we get a crowd remotely like the one we had today... they definitely breathed some life into our boys in the first period - I know they definitely frustrated Regina in the first period," said Hornung. "We’ll just control our emotions. We’ll have to get through the first few shifts, and then I think we’ll settle down.”
